A letter to Levi (my first grandson)

The doctors tell us that you are going to be with us in the next couple of weeks.  We can’t wait to meet you.  We have seen pictures, have been praying for you, and have been counting the days and weeks for the day we get together.  There are a lot of things I want to tell you, but you won’t understand for a while now.  So let me collect my thoughts so that I won’t forget something later on.

I am your Grandpa.  Your daddy is my son.  I remember counting the days and weeks before we got to meet him as well.  That was 33 years ago!  I know your dad is kind of cool.  But believe me, he was not so cool to begin with.  There was a day when he wore diapers, drooled on himself, and made a mess when he was eating as well.  He could not always walk, eat without a bib, nor chew with his mouth closed!  He had to learn those things, and you will too.  I can’t wait to be a part of you learning to do these things as well.

Your Grandma GiGi is my wife, and is your Daddy’s Momma.  She is a person who has a lot of love in her heart.  In all honesty, she is a huge part of why your Daddy is so great.  She was much better at bathing your Dad, and making sure that he was well fed and clothed.  When your Dad got a little older, she even participated in Karate’ with him.  That is probably a tradition your Daddy is going to continue with you as well.  He liked that a lot!

We adopted your Mommy into our family about six years ago when she became a part of your Daddy’s life.  We love her so much.  She is beautiful, and strong.  She is quiet and creative.  She takes common items and makes them amazing.  We did not know her when she was your age, but we can only imagine that her early days were just like yours.

You have so much to look forward to!  You get to see your Mommy and Daddy.  You get to learn about colors, food, and how a feather tickles and a block bonks!  Flannigan is a wonder land.  He is soft, and wet, and moves.  He waddles and runs.  He snorts and snores.  You are going to have a lot of laughs about that one!  You are going to get to go to church, and learn about Jesus, the most wonderful thing of all.  And you are going learn music, and learn to sing!  I can’t wait to hear that!  You aren’t going to be stuck on that mat all the time.  You are going to be crawling, and walking and running, and sometimes, all three at once.  Then there are going to be bikes, and schools… but we will get into that later.

We just want you to know that we love you very much.  Happy Birthday, Levi!
